ColorOverlay

Recolour a whole layer at once, keeping its shape and its soft edges.

Photoshop's Color Overlay: one Color, red at first, laid over the layer's pixels with its BlendMode and Opacity and clipped to its shape. Key its Opacity in the Cook window to flash a layer and fade it back.
